The VA Long Beach Health Care System (VALBHCS) and the University of California Irvine in Long Beach, CA are actively recruiting a Board Certified/Board eligible physician to work in our beautiful spinal cord injury center in Long Beach California. We are seeking board eligible Spinal Cord Injury, PMR, Internal Medicine, or neurology trained physicians to provide excellent care for American’s Heroes, particularly those who have suffered devastating injuries fighting for our country.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an incredible interdisciplinary clinical practice and setting. The Long Beach SCI Center was the first SCI Center in our nation, built from the ground up to serve the needs of this Veterans population. It was named after Ernest Bors MD, the first Chief of SCI, who advocated for an interdisciplinary approach to treat each individual. If selected, you are the leader of an interdisciplinary team composed of a nurse, case manager, social worker, psychologist, pharmacist, and therapist. You will have the support of subspecialists and administration to provide excellent care to your panel of 120 patients. You would take care of your patient along the continuum of care, taking of care of their outpatient and inpatient issues to provide a boutique medicine experience. Our veterans express extreme gratitude for this unique personalized approach. We believe this is the best way to address the issues that affect those with SCI.
Selected candidates have the opportunity to apply for faculty appointment at UC Irvine & be involved with teaching of SCI fellows in our accredited fellowship program along with medical students, medicine residents & other learners and providers. The selected candidate will report to the Chief of Spinal Care Injury. The VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHCS), located in Long Beach, CA, is part of VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network (VISN22), which includes facilities in Las Vegas, Loma Linda, San Diego, and the Greater Los Angeles area. The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is one of the most diversified tertiary health care providers in the VA. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.
You are invited to consider joining the team of the VA Long Beach Medical Center and UC Irvine School of Medicine, providing care for the world’s best patients while providing training and mentorship for fellows, residents, and students. You should be board certified/eligible board eligible Spinal Cord Injury, PM&R, Internal Medicine, or neurology and a US citizen with current US licensure (any state) with no history of revocations or suspension. Permanent Residents may be considered if no US citizen is selected.
You have the career opportunity to conduct research, create performance improvement projects, and teach the next generation of clinicians. Previous post-training academic experience and a history of publication in peer-reviewed SCI/PM&R journals is preferred. This position includes both inpatient and outpatient activity and the opportunity to teach learners at all levels (students, residents, and fellows). You will spend most of your time in direct patient care and you have the opportunity to teach medical residents in inpatient/outpatient settings
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, (May be required to work evenings or weekends as a 24/7 Full-Time Physician).

- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Board Certification in Spinal Cord Injury Care & PM&R preferred, but Board Eligibility may also be considered.

Expected Salary range will be competitive for the academic rank and include a full benefits and features package to support high quality professional practice and favorable work-life-family balance.
