Ochsner Health System, one of the largest non-profit, academic, multi-specialty healthcare delivery systems in the United States, provides clinical and hospital patient care in 40 hospitals and more than 200 health centers and urgent care centers throughout the region. The Chair of Surgery will provide leadership to and oversight of the Department which consists of over 60 providers in 6 sections including vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, abdominal transplant surgery, cardiac/thoracic/congenital heart surgery, plastics and reconstructive surgery and general surgery.  The Department of Surgery was first chaired by our founder and namesake, Alton Ochsner, and while centered at our flagship teaching hospital (Ochsner Medical Center), includes surgeons who practice at 5 additional Ochsner hospitals in the New Orleans Metro Area. Our education mission includes a residency program in general surgery (finishes 6 chiefs per year) and fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and abdominal transplant surgery.

The new Chair has responsibility for the development and maintenance of efficient and effective clinical operations and the promotion of collaborative work relationships between clinicians at all levels. The Chair oversees all academic and teaching components of surgery and ensures the highest level of clinical quality and patient safety. Current board certification in General Surgery and/or a related surgical subspecialty area is required. Candidates must exhibit values consistent with the mission of Ochsner Health System to serve, heal, lead, educate and innovate.
