TRAUMA / SICU Opportunity
HENRY FORD ALLEGIANCE is not your average “community hospital.” We are the hidden gem of Jackson and the only hospital in Jackson County, with the next smaller hospital being 20 miles north (St. Joes/Chelsea). We are the only Level II trauma within a 40 mile radius between 94 and 127 HWY. On April 6, 2015 we went live activating Trauma calls, with 24/7 coverage provided in-house coverage with a physician and advanced practice professional.
In January 2017, Henry Ford Allegiance Health (HFAH) we verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) and a successful re-verification in 2020. This allows our trauma center to treat and admit the most severely injured patients, including those who have had major automobile accidents, sporting accidents, falls, head injuries and spinal injuries- instead of risking transport to a higher level trauma center. Henry Ford Health System’s Detroit hospital is our system Level I verified center approximately 70 miles to the East.
As a level II verified trauma center, HFAH is required to demonstrate an organized and coordinated approach to treating serious injury across the continuum of care. This includes the around-the-clock availability of all necessary trauma personnel, equipment, supplies, education and guidelines for care, including the following.
- Immediate 24-hour coverage by general surgeons
- Coverage by specialist in:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Emergency Medicine
- Cardiac Surgery
- Thoracic Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Radiology (Interventional Radiology)
- Critical Care
Our hospital has 425 licensed beds and we are the only verified level II trauma center in our region. Our Emergency Department (ED) has approximately 75,000- 80,000 visits per year. In the last year, 1300-1400 patients visited our ED for a trauma related complaint and approximately 74% of those patients were admitted. The large majority of our patients are injured as a result of blunt trauma (> 90%), and the remainder are penetrating (7%). We do continue to transfer out pediatrics, burns and certain highly specialized injuries.
Our trauma surgery coverage includes our trauma medical director and five surgical intensivists who also cover the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). These surgeons also cover acute care surgery every other week. The service has 24/7 trauma advanced practice provider (APP) coverage for our trauma patients in collaboration with the attending trauma surgeon. We have a general medical education (GME) program with three surgical residents per year.
HFAH has increased our total trauma volume more than 20% over the past three years; in that time we also reduced our adult (non - burn) trauma transfers out by 46%.
