Friends Hospital

In 1813, the Quakers founded Friends Hospital based on the belief that all people, even those with a mental illness, can live a “moral, ordered existence if treated with kindness, dignity and respect.”

Today, Friends Hospital still operates under this original mission as written by the Hospital’s founders and, using the principles of wellness and recovery, strives to provide patients with the tools they need to understand and manage their illness.

On 100 beautiful acres in Northeast Philadelphia stands Friends Hospital, one of America’s oldest hospitals and the first private non-profit institution in the country, founded exclusively to help persons with mental illness. When people come onto the grounds of Friends Hospital, we want them to feel that they have left the city and entered a quiet refuge where the process of healing the mind has taken place for nearly two centuries.

A commitment to excellence in psychiatric diagnostics, research, treatment and education is at the core of Friends Hospital’s approach to treatment today. We strive to blend advancing medical treatments with a compassionate and supportive environment. This approach has earned us the distinction as one of Philadelphia’s top mental health facilities and the only inpatient psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania to achieve Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® from The Joint Commission for four years in a row.

In striving to achieve our mission, decisions and actions are guided by several basic values, including:

  • Approaching each person, regardless of the degree of illness, with the belief that he or she is a unique and worthy individual who deserves treatment that is highly individualized and compassionate.
  • Being responsive to patients, families and communities.
  • Holding ourselves to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
